Congregations in Utah came together for one Sunday service focused on our ministry of openess and welcome. They got some great press. Way to go Utah congregations!

“MIDDLEBORO — The Rev. Patricia “Tricia” Tummino picked up the rainbow flag and swung open the front doors of the church. She slid the flag into the holder as morning sunlight filtered through the colors.

“When the church is open, the flag is up,” said Tummino, minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Society on South Main Street.

The rainbow flag — a symbol of gay and lesbian pride — is hung each day at the church, where Tummino will officiate at the marriages of several gay couples following the May 17 date when Massachusetts is slated to become the first state in the country to allow same-sex marriages.

‘We’re extending rights to people who recognize their full humanity,” Tummino said. “I’m not sure why it’s so hard for us.’”
